Tallinn Fashion Week

34
The top secret Soviet military Kalinin Factory that once manufactured semiconductors for Soviet military apparatus hosts Tallinn Fashion Week. My mother used to work in that Factory as a young engineer after university in the 1960s. The horror stories she has told… Today the huge compound is home for artists and second-hand shops under a common name Telliskivi Loomelinnak in the wannabe bohemian Pelgulinn neighbourhood. The ice cold atmosphere is bizarre and dark blue, audience sits in fur coats and winter parkas and sips vodka cocktails. There are no restrooms. The first snow storm has just hit the town unexpectedly. But everyone is un-Estonianly happy. Apparently the venue is full of some sort of celebrities, photographers keep snapping them against the ad wall. I recognize noone. Oksana Tandit and Katrin Kuldma present their collections. In Tallinn you cannot be really sure that what you see on stage is actually in fashion. You don't see the same style in the overly-expensive shops or in the streets. I love them both. Katrin Kuldma ties her models' hair up in pony tails with silk shawls. The show is over in an hour, no elaborate introductions or epilogues. Just straightforward Estonian business in the cold winter night.
