December 10 marked the Human Rights Day, and Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves warned its people that human rights in the Internet are under attack. The BRIC countries (Brasil, Russia, India, China) try to restrict Internet freedom at a UN conference in Dubai. President Ilves took a strong stance declaring that if those countries push through restrictions on the Interent freedom, we will create another Internet. “I will not let those countries determine what I can say in Estonia”.
According to the annual report on Human Rights in Estonia 30% of people don’t know what human rights are, only 54% think that human rights are respected in Estonia. In the environment of frozen sallaries the primary concern is social issues, the biggest “abuse” being small income (23%). The Human Rights Declaration does not define income as a human right, but does say that “everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration”. In that light it is noteworthy that 52% think that the state should provide them with average income (abt 700 euros net).
