As Tallinners know Tallinn lives at homes, inisde, hidden away from the freezing winter weather. You have to visit a friend to find warmth, morning pancakes, Proseco and piano music. I had not been to Uus Maailm (New World) borough for ages, a triangular district between Pärnu mnt, the railway and Suur-Ameerika St, a place where local community is known to be active and creative. On a January Saturday afternoon the  streets are empty and everything is closed—the community building on the corner of Koidu and Videviku will open only after dark at 5 p.m. We walk by a local self-made basement libary called Kapsad (Cabbages) where movies are shown on Tuesdays. Ugly Soviet buildings on Videviku Street will never be a welcome sight for those of us who grew up in the Soviet times. I stare a long time at a  traffic sign that allows preagnant women to park for free—what a wonderful idea—although why a residential area in Tallinn should have paid parking in the first place beats me.  The VOLGA auto shop in the corner of Videviku and Kristiina is a nostalgic reminder of times when local grocery stores still existed. Today Tallinners do most of their buying business in huge faceless shopping centres.  On the corner of Koidu and Saturni an old shop building is sealed shut, waiting for someone to open up a bakery for the pleasure of the New World. We meet less than 10 people on our afternoon walk. Pics Saturni @ corner of Koidu.
